My love for animals started at a young age. My parents were heavily involved in animal charity work and our family home was always brimming with dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. It wasn’t long after moving into my own home that I got two little tabby kittens. Tragically, one died aged around two. That was it for a few years. Then I saw on TV what I now know to be an Egyptian Mau — the cat was absolutely stunning! I read up on their characteristics: social, affectionate, playful and athletic, and knew this was the breed I wanted. I resisted for a number of years as I was unsure how a Mau would interact with my tabby, but I needn’t have worried — they got on just fine. My tabby has since passed, but I’m left with a lovely little Mau family; yes, I got more! They have all of those characteristics and more — so much so that they are like little monkeys, hence the prefix MonkeyMau.

I started showing and breeding Burmese in 1981, and became a judge in 1993. In 2000 I met and was entranced by the newly introduced Egyptian Mau, and haven’t looked back! I now judge cats in all six Sections, including of course my beloved Egyptian Maus. To keep busy, I also judge dressage and show Borzoi hounds.
